Progressive metalcore pioneers Born of Osiris released their seventh studio album, Through Shadows via Sumerian Records, marking a significant milestone in their over two-decade-long career. Accompanying the album’s release, the band premiered an official music video for The War That You Are, offering fans a dynamic visual introduction to their latest work. This release follows a series of successful singles and underscores the band’s continued evolution as a trio, navigating both personal and musical transformations.
The band has seen numerous lineup changes, with the current roster featuring drummer Cameron Losch, the sole remaining founding member, lead vocalist Ronnie Canizaro, and guitarist Nick Rossi. Notably, Through Shadows is their first album as a streamlined trio, following the departure of founding guitarist Lee McKinney and longtime keyboardist Joe Buras in 2024. Despite these changes, the band has maintained their signature sound, blending progressive metalcore with elements of djent and deathcore.
Through Shadows comprises 13 tracks that showcase Born of Osiris’ musical evolution while staying true to their roots. The album opens with Seppuku; It hits hard – like getting punched in the solar plexus by a fist composed of cyberpunk textures. The groovy and uplifting Elevate is up next – a megaton of fun!
Things get somewhat more solemn as the title track, Through Shadows unveils itself and The War that You Are brings a brilliant balance between chaos and composure; beauty and brutality. Other standout tracks include the epic and expansive In Desolation; the new, yet nostalgic and immensely catchy Torchbearer; and A Mind Short Circuiting with its complex and calculated foreboding madness. Another notable highlight is Activated, featuring guest vocalist Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath, adding a fresh dynamic to the album’s sound.
Produced by the band alongside Josh Strock and Zach Jones, the album emphasises a polished, yet aggressive sound with intricate song structures that balance chaos and clarity. It has been praised for its sci-fi aggression and polished soundscapes, with critics noting its nod to the band’s deathcore origins while exploring new atmospheric and introspective territories.
The band’s engagement with fans extends beyond the stage. On social media platforms like Facebook, they have actively solicited feedback, asking fans to share their top three favourite tracks from Through Shadows. Responses have highlighted tracks like Dark Fable, noted for its unique early 2000s Japanese video game vibe, indicating the album’s diverse appeal.
As Born of Osiris continues to navigate their career as a trio, Through Shadows represents both a continuation of their legacy and a bold step forward. With a successful album launch, an engaging new video, and an extensive tour schedule, the band is poised to maintain their prominence in the progressive metalcore scene.
