Kittie – Spit XXV

Word has it that from the sweltering pits of underground music, heavy metal maidens Kittie have heaved out a relic that remembers and resonates riffs of historic savagery. Spit XXV, a four-track EP forged to honour the 25 year anniversary of their gold-plated debut crusher, Spit. This beast rages with re-forged anthems—”Brackish,” “Charlotte,” “Do You Think I’m A Whore,” and the title track “Spit”—all resurrected and amplified by the legendary Garth Richardson, the same sonic alchemist who conjured the original 1999 sessions at EMAC Studios. Dropping like a meteor via Sumerian Records on September 19th, the EP kicks off with the manic maelstrom of “Spit XXV,” ready to ravage mosh pits.

I’m not going to lie.. Spit XXV goes hard! Condensed, refined, and focussed; the groove and fury is unfiltered. A truly royal reimagining, while staying true to its rebellious origins.

Back in 2000, Spit erupted from four Ontario hellions, catapulting them into the global coliseum as nu-metal titans. With over 660,000 U.S. sales and gold certification, it shattered the boys’ club, proving that women could wield axes with venomous precision and conquer charts amid the era’s testosterone-fueled dominance. Rolling Stone hailed the title track as #82 on their “100 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of All Time” in 2023.

This EP storms in during Kittie’s second apocalypse, hot on the heels of 2024’s Fire, their first fresh carnage in 13 years. That album scorched charts—#13 on UK Rock & Metal, #20 on Billboard Top Album Sales—with “We Are Shadows” clawing to #20 on Mainstream Rock Airplay. It even snagged a 2025 Juno nod for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year, affirming their evolution from nu-metal rebels to immortal legends.

Reuniting with Richardson was a nostalgic ritual of revisiting, allowing Kittie to infuse these primal hymns with 25 years of scarred wisdom while preserving the raw, gut-punching power that redefined the genre. Since clawing back from hiatus in 2022, Kittie’s resurgence has been a full-throttle rampage. They’ve conquered festivals like Sick New World, Welcome to Rockville, and Sonic Temple.

Spit XXV is the ultimate testament to Kittie’s deathless wrath and unyielding metamorphosis. A quarter-century after four teenage felines from Ontario stormed heavy music’s darkest alleys, Kittie continues to claw and carve their path through the metal landscape.

Dwell in Darkness. Live in Light.
