ENVY – EUNOIA

The latest full length by Japanese Post Hardcore stalwarts Envy entitled ‘Eunoia’ is as volcanic as it is ethereal and evocative.

Beginning with the saccharine slice of syrupy ambience that is ‘Piecemeal’ and sliding into the exhilarating and emotive ‘Imagination and Creation’, ‘Eunoia’ sets a sonic precedent which is drenched in shimmering guitars and lilting melodies.

Honestly the type of lilting Post Hardcore meets Post Rock that Envy specialize is not my thing yet what they do, being veterans of their craft, they do well. Songs like ‘The Night And The Void’ with its balance of ethereal atmospherics and sparkling guitars is a veritable lullaby.

For the most part ‘Eunoia’ is a mellow album that leans into the type of Post Rock plied by My Bloody Valentine and Jesus And The Mary Chain. ‘Lingering Echoes’ evokes vintage Girls Against Boys’ with its spoken word passages and rolling rhythms.

‘Whitehout’ is perhaps the most propulsive song on ‘Eunoia’. Its rollicking tempo and stabs of jarring guitars are infectious. It does however fit into the overall aesthetic that ‘Eunoia’ is steeped in.

I applaud Envy on creating a work of sonic art that is cohesive and creative. These veterans have created an album where cinematic textures, evocative vocals and rolling rhythms melt into one another with mellifluous incandesence.

‘Eunoia’ may not be my cup of tea yet for fans of the band and anyone who enjoys sparkling Post Rock and gleaming Post Hardcore, ‘Eunoia’ will undoubtedly appeal to your sensibilities.
